A2 Round Tool Steel

This air-hardening steel is highly versatile. Use it to replace O-1 when you need better wear resistance and stability. It is universally used for industrial hammers, knives, slitters, punches, tool holders, and cutting tools.

Heat Treating

Start slow to heat the A2 to 1292°F then heat more quickly to 1922-2012°F. Maintain at least 1652°F while working. Reheat as necessary. Cool very slowly after forging.

Heat thoroughly at 1544-1565°F, then furnace cool no more than 68°F per hour.

 Stress Relieving:

To reduce the risk of damaging A2 tool steel, use stress relieving measures after heavy grinding or machining. Heat slowly to 1238-1292°F then allow it to remain at that temperature for two hours per 25mm of steel. Cool down in the furnace.

Start with an initial slow heat to 1112-1292°F and soak. Continuing heating to 1742-1796°F for the final hardening. Allow the steel to equalize, then quench in oil or cool air.

Heat the metal equally to the desired temperature and hold for 25 minutes per cm of thickness. You can double temper A2 steel after an intermediate cooling to room temperature. Temper at 392°F for a balance of hardness or 662°F where strength is more important than hardness.
